Sub-mains are used to extend supplies to units, extensions or outbuildings, and they must be sized and protected correctly for the load they carry so that the supply stays safe and stable.

A sub-main is the cable that carries power from the main board to another board or another building. It has to be sized for the load, protected against fault current and installed so that it can be isolated safely. Undersized sub-mains show up as overheating, nuisance tripping or a supply that dips when equipment starts.
