The inspection looks for wear, damage and overloading, and testing confirms that protective devices still work. The results set the date for the next test and give you a record of the installation's condition.

Periodic testing before age and alterations become a fault

Installations do not stay in the condition they were in on the day they were certified. Circuits get added, accessories get damaged and equipment gets hotter, wetter or more heavily loaded than the original design allowed. Periodic testing is the planned check that finds that change while it can still be dealt with, and it sets a sensible date for the next inspection.
