An electrical installation is the fixed wiring and equipment that carries power around a building: the supply, distribution boards, circuits, sockets, lighting and the protective devices that keep them safe. A commercial installation has to cope with heavier, more varied loads than a home, and it must be designed, installed, tested and certified to BS 7671 so that staff, customers and equipment are protected.

A commercial electrical installation is only as good as the decisions made before the first cable is pulled. Load, routes, protective devices and how the building is actually used all affect whether the finished system is safe to live with or becomes a problem at the next alteration.
