An EICR combines two things: a visual inspection of the installation and a series of electrical tests on its circuits. Together they show whether the wiring is safe to keep in use, highlight anything that needs attention and are written up in a report. Where work is needed, the same team can carry out the remedial work and re-test it.

An EICR is two activities recorded as one report. The visual inspection finds damage, overheating, missing barriers and unsuitable alterations. The tests find the conditions you cannot see, such as poor insulation or a protective device that will not operate. Neither half is optional if the report is going to be relied on.
